You can be billed retroactively
If your business plays protected music in public without a licence, KODA can charge for the entire period the music has been playing. And ordinary Spotify may not be played publicly in a business at all. With Soundhero the rights are cleared in advance, so you play legally from day one.

If your business plays copyright-protected music publicly - in the shop, in the office or at an event - without the required music licence, it can trigger a backdated claim. Under Danish copyright law, KODA can charge for the whole period during which the music was actually played.
The same applies to streaming: according to Spotify's own terms, ordinary Spotify is for personal use only and may not be played publicly in businesses such as bars, restaurants, shops and salons - in other words, anywhere other people can hear it.
What playing music without a licence can cost:
- The backdated bill: KODA charges the licence for the entire period the music played without an agreement - not just from the day they find out.
- Additions on top: beyond the back payment, compensation for the copyright infringement and administration fees can be added.
- Ultimately the courts: if the claim is not paid, the case can end up in the district court, where damages and legal costs are added. In 2022 a hair salon was ordered to pay DKK 15,000 to KODA.
